prevention of contagious disease transmission course
Austin’s School of Spa Technology is offering a 3-hour course on Prevention of Contagious Disease Transmission in a traditional classroom format. This course has been approved by The State Education Department.
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will receive two credentials:
- School-issued Certificate of Completion required for licensing
- Certificate in Prevention of Bloodborne and Airborne Pathogens from the National Safety Council/Green Cross
Who needs to take this course?
New York State Practice of Barbering Law requires all applicants for a barbering license (whether based on apprenticeship, education, experience or reciprocity) to demonstrate “successful completion of a course of study approved by the Education Department concerning the transmission of contagious diseases and the proper methods of sanitation and sterilization to be employed in barber shops, especially as they relate to tools and instruments”. This course satisfies this requirement.
What is covered in this course?
Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:
- Identify OSHA training requirements and employees covered by the OSHA standards
- Explain and sketch the four stages in the process of transmission of infectious diseases
- Differentiate between exposure and infection
- Discuss transmission, symptoms, and prevention techniques for:
- Hepatitis B (HPV)
- Hepatitis C (HCV)
- Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS)
- Explain and provide examples of the four types of strategies to reduce occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens, including:
- Engineering controls
- Work practice controls
- Personal protective equipment
- Universal precautions
- Demonstrate proper handwashing techniques
- Discuss transmission and prevention techniques for airborne pathogens and provide examples
- Differentiate between sterilization, disinfection, and sanitation techniques
- Demonstrate proper disinfection procedures for implements, clippers and outliners, and linens and capes
- Differentiate between various scalp and hair disorders, and recognize need for referral to a medical practitioner

Please report to Austin’s School of Spa Technology, located at 855 Central Avenue, Albany, NY 12206, at least 15 minutes prior to the course starting time. You will be required to show proof of identification.
How much does the course cost?
The cost is $49, inclusive of tuition, books, supplies, and certificates. Please see the enrollment agreement for more details, including a refund policy.
How do I register for the course?
Please fill out the enrollment agreement for the date/time you will be taking the course, and mail to Austin's School of Spa Technology with a check or money order in the amount of $49 to guarantee your seat. Please keep in mind that enrollments are limited to 30 participants per session, so early registration is encouraged!
